Cursor

Coding agents · Cursor AI, Cursor IDE

A code editor app from Anysphere, built on VS Code, with a built-in AI agent: you work in the editor, the agent sits next to you, and you pick a model from different vendors or use its own Composer model. The agent does what Claude Code and Codex do: reads the project, edits files, runs commands; there is also a terminal version and cloud agents. It reads project rules from AGENTS.md and its own rules in .cursor/rules, and connects outside systems through MCP.

Cursor: models, the agent and rules

  • Models · its own Composer, Grok, Claude and Gemini; OpenAI models until the cutoff announced for Nov 12, 2026. The lineup depends on the plan: the free one gets fewer. If a provider blocks your region, you can add your own API key.
  • The agent · modes: Agent edits files and runs commands itself, Ask only answers, Plan writes a plan first. It works in the editor, in the terminal and as a cloud agent.
  • Project rules · the .cursor/rules folder (the old .cursorrules file still works) and AGENTS.md at the repo root.
  • Plans · free Hobby with limits, Pro at $20, Pro+ at $60 and Ultra at $200 a month, Teams at $40 per user.
  • What it is built on · built on VS Code: VS Code extensions work in it.
