Predicate

Formal verification · a yes-or-no question

In mathematics, a statement with a variable that becomes true or false for each value of the variable: P(x)P(x) = “xx is even” gives “yes” for x=4x = 4 and “no” for x=3x = 3. Formally it is a function P ⁣:X→{yes,no}P\colon X \to \{\text{yes}, \text{no}\}. A predicate about programs takes a program and answers “yes” or “no”: “does the code write to the payments table”, “will the program charge money without an order”. Rice’s theorem says which such predicates cannot be computed.
