A program that, given a set of conditions such as “the sum is greater than ten and the balance is not negative”, finds values for which all conditions hold, or proves that no such values exist. It does not have to try everything one by one: it reasons about whole classes of cases at once. The best-known solver, Z3, was created by Microsoft Research. The Apalache engine turns a model into such conditions and hands them to a solver.
