IDE

Agents and tools · integrated development environment, AI IDE, AI-native IDE

The program where code is written: editor, hints, debugger and project launcher in one window. VS Code and JetBrains are typical examples. Agents plug into an IDE through extensions and show edits right in the files. An AI IDE (AI-native IDE) is one where the agent is built in from the start, as in Cursor, a VS Code fork. The alternative is a CLI agent in the terminal, like Claude Code and Codex.

Plain IDE vs AI IDE vs CLI agent

  • Plain IDE · VS Code, JetBrains. You write the code; the environment hints and runs it.
  • IDE + agent extension · VS Code or JetBrains with Claude Code or Codex. The agent is installed separately, writes code from your task on its vendor’s models, and you review edits in the files.
  • AI IDE · Cursor. The agent is part of the program itself, and you pick models from several vendors.
  • CLI agent · Claude Code, Codex CLI. A separate program, no IDE needed; you review edits in your editor or in git.
