AI agents for VS Code

  • GitHub Copilot · built into VS Code by Microsoft, with an agent mode and a free tier with limits.
  • Claude Code · an extension from Anthropic: the same agent as in the terminal, on a Claude plan or pay-as-you-go API.
  • Codex · an extension from OpenAI, included in ChatGPT plans.
  • Cline · a free open-source extension: you plug in your own key for any model and pay only for the model.
  • GigaCode · Sber’s agent with a VS Code extension.
  • Cursor · a separate editor built on VS Code with a built-in agent; you install it instead of VS Code, and VS Code extensions work in it.
